AHSAA State Golf Tourney: UMS-Wrightâs Frances Brown shoots 66
UMS-Wright’s Frances Brown fired a 6-under 66 Monday at the RTJ Grand National Golf Course to lead all golfers as the 2023 AHSAA State Golf Championships completed day one of the 36-hole championship meet.
Brown’s total gave her the first-day lead in the Girls’ Class 7A competition. Auburn’s Kate Ha was close behind with a 3-under 69, followed by Baker’s Katelyn Foster and Grissom’s Klare Griffin, both shooting 2-under 70 rounds. Huntsville’s Gabriella Nicastro finished at even par 72. Auburn and Grissom were tied at 228 for the team lead, while UMS-Wright and Huntsville were deadlocked in third as well.

The Class 7A boys’ competition was equally competitive with five players finishing under par. James Clemens’ Jack Mitchell finished with a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round. Chase Kyes of Spain Park was fired a 3-under 69 with Trip Duke of Fairhope, Will Stelt of Auburn and Pierce Becker of Vestavia Hills all coming with rounds of 1-under 71.
The defending state champion Rebels had a three-stroke team lead over Auburn after Monday’s round with a 7-over 295. Auburn was 3-strokes back at 298 with Enterprise and Spain Park coming in at 302 and 304, respectively.
The races were close in the other divisions as well:
CLASS 6A BOYS: Stanhope Elmore’s Josiah Gilbert, who led all sub-state qualifiers with a 63 last week, shot 2-under par 70 to take the individual lead. Spanish Fort’s Jackson Spybey and UMS-Wright’s Powell Zundel were both one stroke behind with 1-under 71s.
UMS-Wright had the best boys’ team score of the day with a 6-over 294 to take the 7A lead. Mountain Brook was seven strokes back at 301, Northridge shot 302 and Cullman, 307.
CLASS 5A BOYS: Bailey Sutter of West Point took the lead after day one with a 1-over 73. Randolph’s Andrew Hinson had a 2-over 74, and Ethan Roberts of Scottsboro came in at 6-over 78 to help the Wildcats take a one-stroke lead over Randolph, 323–324. Gulf Shores and Demopolis were tied for third with 330 team totals.
CLASS 4A BOYS: White Plains’ Sawyer Edwards had a 2-under 71 to take a 2-stroke lead over Hudson Lawson of Haleyville, who had a 73. Three strokes back were Cole Lindeman of Priceville and Jake Temple of Haleyville each shot 2-over 74.
Haleyville built an eight-shot lead with a 21-over 309. White Plains was second after day one at 317, followed by Bayside Academy, 325, and Jackson, 333.
CLASS 3A BOYS: Westbrook Christian’s Eli Edge led the field afterday one with a 3-over 75. Weaver’s Nick Ledbetter was the only other golfer to break 80 finishing four strokes back at 79.
Westbrook Christian took a commanding 15-stroke lead in the team competition with a 329 total. Trinity Presbyterian and Opp finished 344 and 346, respectively, and Lauderdale County shot 356.
CLASS 1A/2A BOYS: Bayshore Christian’s Michael Heaton carded a 2-under 70 to take a five-stroke lead into Tuesday’s round. Elba’s Jay Wilson had as 75, Pike Liberal’s Jackson Cleveland and Winston County’s Tyden Steele were seven strokes back with rounds of 77.
North Sand Mountain’s 325 total leads the 1A-2A division heading into Tuesday. Pike Liberal is second at 341, Elba at 346, and Athens Bible, 353.
CLASS 6A GIRLS: Pike Road’s Yvette Gorden fashioned a strong 4-under 68 to lead the pack at the Patriots took the first-day team lead with a 230 total. Hartselle’s Ginger Heath, playing as a n individual, was close behind a 2-under 70. Rounding out the first-day team scores were Spanish Fort, 238, Cullman, 264, and Mountain Brook, 314.
CLASS 4A/5A GIRLS: Virginia Ann Holmes of Trinity Presbyterian had a strong 3-under 69 to take the first-day lead over Cherokee County’s Ellie Cothran, who had a 2-over 75. Trinity also led the team race with a 242. Mars Hill Bible followed at 249, Northside, 269, and Alexandria, 275.
CLASS 1A/3A GIRLS: Tuscaloosa Academy’s Anna Christian shot a 4-under 68, and Chloe Ruble of Lindsay Lane was on her heels with s 3-under 69. Alabama Christian’s Julie Walding was third after day one with a 75.
Tuscaloosa Academy, playing in their first AHSAA state tourney, took the first-day lead with a 224 round. Lindsay Lane was second at 284, Houston Academy 288, and Piedmont, 343.
Round two gets underway Tuesday morning.
